Suckered – 1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT (plus bonus ’78!)

July 5, 2013

As regular readers know, I am a sucker for a nice Alfetta, or even a not-so-nice Alfetta, which is how I end up spending more on bodywork than I probably should! While they have their issues, which are well-known from when Alfa Romeo was trying to sell these as daily drivers, many of those are significantly diminished by the weekend driver status. When sorted, they are really quite reliable as a fun second car. With that, let’s see today’s example, a 1976 Alfetta GT listed for $1500 in Seward Park, near Seattle, WA.

Early Turbo – 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder

June 24, 2013

Now that Porsche 911s have escaped the reach of mere mortals looking for a rusty but trusty budget classic, we’ll need to find ourselves any one of the many other choices in the rear-engine, flat-6 powered category. Okay, so this is pretty much it unless you go front engined with one of the Subaru coupes. Thumb your nose at those fools who paid five-figure prices for their Porsche 930 with the ridiculous whale tail – you have the same basic idea, and 12 years before the 930 was a glint in Ferry’s eye. What could possibly go wrong? Well, for $3500 asking, you can have your own swing-axled turbo-lagging wonder, just waiting to have some fun getting squirrelly!

Exclusive, Live from the Streets: 1970 Lotus Elan Plus 2

February 8, 2012

On my walk between the cheap Chinatown parking under the 880 overpass and my office, there’s a Salvation Army lot where they sell donated cars. Mostly these are rather mundane sets of wheels such as clapped out Daewoo Leganzas and Mercury Sables – the most interesting thing before this car was a Miata missing substantial chunks of its dash that probably would have made (or was the parts car for) a great LeMons racer. But walking by the lot a few weeks ago, I saw an unusual looking shape in the lot. That was a Beetle, but two cars up from it was this:
