12-Cylinder Alfa(s) – 1987 Alfa Romeo Milano Verde and 1986 Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0

October 16, 2013

Okay, so it was a bit of a cheap trick to call this listing a 12-cylinder Alfa. If you ran them simultaneously, would that count? Honesty nonsense out of the way, we can focus on the cars. Brothers from an Alfetta mother and an Alfa 6 father, these are a pair of great, underappreciated 1980s cars. While everyone is busy chasing E30 BMW M3s, you could get into one of these, either of which is likely to be faster and just as exciting as any E30 car. Stock, the 3.0 6C engine put out 188bhp, and with the addition of S cams, you could get around 200bhp in an under-3000-lb. car. Find this pair of 6-cylinder Alfas for $5000 in Walnut Creek, CA.

Toyota Coupes #2 – 1979 Toyota Celica GT

October 2, 2013

What a difference a decade makes! While yesterday’s Corona Mark 2 coupe was very much of the 1960s, with its handsome sloping roofline and polished metal trim, Toyota had moved up in the world towards solidifying its position as one of the world’s major automakers. By 1979, there was a successful line of pickups, along with the Corolla, Corona, and Cressida sedans. The Celica was added in 1971, and in 1978 the second generation A40/A50 Celica was introduced. You can find this 1979 RA42 Toyota Celica Liftback for $3000 in Overland Park, KS.

Hitting Bottom – 1986 Porsche 944

September 29, 2013

One of the best places to look for great deals is in cars that are at the bottom of their depreciation curve. Often, this has as much to do with the car as with how many survive, or how popular it was. And it does appear that a high survival rate, due to robust drivetrains and zinc-oxide-coated bodies, is contributing to the low, low values of Porsche 944s, particularly the base models. For example, you can find this 1986 Porsche 944 in apparently very decent condition for only $3200 in, well, it’s hard to tell where it is – the listing does not specify location, and the car’s Illinois plates together with the seller’s northern Utah phone number do not give a definite clue. But the seller is moving cross country, so at least you’ll know he soon won’t be in the same location as the car!
