Does it ever happen to you that you’ll see a car that would have been boring in the context of its contemporaries, but taken out of context, it’s nice to see it still on the road? Naturally-aspirated 1980s Subarus are such a car – not really that exciting to drive, or to look at, but seeing one of these relatively odd Japanese cars on the road, particularly in good condition, is enjoyable – it recalls the days when Subaru was still weird, and not cranking out flat-four powered versions of the same oversized, overweight crossovers and SUVs that everyone makes these days (well, and some fun rally-inspired cars). Spotless – 1985 Shelby Charger Turbo
August 22, 2014If the Toyota MR2 wasn’t big enough for you, the Pontiac Fiero too crude, and the VW Scirocco all too common, you just had to look at Chrysler’s Omni series for inspiration. Specifically, Carroll Shelby was doing his bit to make some of the most utilitarian, uninteresting products into rockets that evoked what he did to the Sunbeam Alpine and AC Ace. Mostly, this involved turbos and performance suspension, and a great example of that era is this 1985 Shelby Charger Turbo for sale with bidding at $2175, reserve not met, and just under 2 days left to go in Crestline, OH.
Long Lost Cousins – 1981 VW Scirocco and 1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT
July 30, 2014One of the major shortcomings of most car shows, aside from the fact that the owners aren’t driving their cars, is that they’re mostly arranged by marque or by year. What if show organizers arranged cars by more esoteric themes, such as designers, design trends, or social themes? You could tell much more interesting stories that way – juxtaposing Engle-designed Lincolns and Imperials, for example, or a progression spartan post-war European cars through the 1980s. Or you could set various cars from the wedge styling trend together so you could look at a VW Scirocco, Isuzu Impulse/Piazza, Lotus Esprit, Lamborghini Countach, and Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT all in the same row. Well, some of those are out of our budget, but perhaps these two cars can get you started on your own wedge collection. Check out this 1981 VW Scirocco 16v for sale for $3000 in West Hollywood, CA.
