This is not a Honda site – 1972 Honda AZ 600

March 3, 2010

So from my past few posts, you’d think I was going Honda/Fiat specific, in some strange amalgamation of reliability and character. However, that’s not at all the case, but these cars just keep popping up. I’ve already written about the Honda AZ600, but that example needed some work and was on eBay with reserve not yet met. It’s always better to look at cars on local classifieds for a true indication of local sales prices – eBay confuses things with competitive bidders (it only takes two idiots to make a market, and I’ve been one of those two), and has a broader audience and the potential of fraudulent bidders inflating the final price.

The car featured today is something more like what I was hoping to find the first time around. It’s still in an attractive color for the car (froggy green), and has some cool period equipment. It also wears its age much better than some other examples, although the seller does admit it needs body work. Find it listed for $2700 in East San Jose, CA.

What the Fiat?? Fiat 128 2-door

March 2, 2010

Well, I’m not going to go into a long diatribe since I just wrote about a pair of these, but I just wanted to make sure I featured this since it’s in remarkably good shape for the price. If you’re in the market for a Fiat 128, right now you’re spoiled for choice – this makes for a record 3 cars currently available. Being a southern car, this one should be pretty rust-free too. You can find it in Lancaster, CA, just outside of LA, for $1850.

Too soon? 1986 Honda Accord Limousine

March 1, 2010

Thanks to an article I read this morning, I was thinking back to some of the weird limos you could get in the 1980s. It used to be strictly Cadillacs and Lincolns, but for a while in the 1980s, you could also get stretched versions of unlikely suspects such as the Chrysler K-car, compact Cadillac Fleetwood, Honda Accord, and probably others. A neighbor on one of my newspaper routes as a child had a dark blue Chrysler Executive, but there were none to be found… so I stretched my memory banks and thought back to a day on I280 when I saw a limo made out of a Honda Accord. Like most other people, I reacted with “why??”. And unlike most others, my other reaction was “cool!”

So that brings us to today’s car. It’s a 1986 Honda Accord limo, most likely built by Marquis Custom Coach in Canoga Park, CA. A quick online search netted this period article from the Boca Raton News about the conversion. At the time, the Accord got 25mpg and was about $24K, and in an era of shrinking cars they could be forgiven for thinking this would be the limo of the future. Find this car for sale in Salem, OR for $2000 (or a quad, if you have one lying around!).
