Eighties Renault Grab Bag – Two Fuegos, a GTA, and a Medallion

October 29, 2010

Note: Found this unpublished article in my posts. So the ads may no longer be up, but an interesting read nonetheless.

To break the chain of Fiats, we’ve got a handful of interesting Renaults. Personally, I lean more towards the stuff they made in the 60s and 70s, but some of the 80s products were noteworthy, at least to a funny furrin’ car lover. And there are some real oddballs out there still… these cars came around at a point when Renault was already having a bumpy time of it in the US market.

This car was already featured on Just A Car Geek, but I still think it’s worth including in the group. With only 24,800 miles, it’s been parked with a blown head gasket since Bush Sr. was in office, so that engine will be locked up good and tight. On the bright side, even though its body is rust-free (or nearly so) and the red paint is shiny, nobody will be able to steal it. It even has a cool Webasto-style rollback sunroof. Pick it up for $1100 in Novi, MI.

Hipster’s Delight – 1976 Fiat 128 woody wagon

August 1, 2010

Well, we’ve covered plenty of Fiat 128s – apparently this is turning into a Fiat site. And there are definitely some weird ones out there – in their death throes in the US market, some poor Fiat dealer thought he could turn over a few more 128 wagons by putting simulated woodgrain panelling down the sides and back. The great thing is, fake wood is back in, in that ironic hipster way. And fake wood on a super-rare car… well, who could resist? Looking surprisingly tidy, check out the listing in W. Asheville, NC, for best offer… which means the seller can’t reconcile the amount of money he’s spent on the car versus what the market will give. Sound familiar?

Treporte – 1976 Fiat 128 3P

July 3, 2010

Well, since thorough market research has shown oddball Fiats are popular with the readership here, here’s a feature of a Fiat 128 3P. You could call this the successor to the 850 Coupe, although this car should be infinitely more practical with its front-engine, rear hatch layout. It’s also got some funky features, including 3 vertical taillights (kind of like on a Mustang, but with curved sides), and a grill that might be a copy of an Aston Martin DBS from the sixties. You’d think this car (and its successor, the 128 SL) would have competed quite effectively with early hatches like the VW Rabbit, while adding a touch of sport. But once again, it seems Fiat’s reputation saved the day, making these cars an exclusive choice for future collectors.

By exclusive, of course, I mean cars which your ordinary, sane person would not choose to run. But since you’re already here, I’ll assume you fall into the other group. My experience with these is limited to a test drive of a mechanic’s 128 wagon. A standout feature on that car was its near-lack of brakes, something I had to discover for myself on the test drive. Outside of that, it was a fairly entertaining, if dinky-feeling car to drive. Wrapping a Scirocco-Junior style body around it should make for a pretty sporting, economical ride. Check it out – beggars can’t be choosers since these are rare as hen’s teeth, but this is a pretty solid looking unit for sale by someone who seems to have a thing for old 128s, at $1250 in Riverside, CA. The seller will throw in a 5-speed Yugo transmission if he sells for asking.
