Questionable Style – 1969 Lincoln Continental Mark III

October 21, 2014

It’s hard to know what to say about the Lincoln Continental Mark III. On the one hand, it was an unabashed success for Lee Iacocca, even greater than his more famous Mustang and Chrysler minivan. On the other hand, his brief for the car was said to be “put a Rolls Royce grill on a Thunderbird”, and sure enough, while the design is elegant, it’s a bit of a mish-mash of Rolls Royce, Elwood Engel Lincoln, and pre-war car, and of course some of the design cues shared by all 1970s personal luxury coupes. It also shares heavily with the Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar, which was of course the key to its success as a profit generator. Check out this 1969 Lincoln Continental Mark III for sale for $3495 in Eugene, OR.

Questionable – 1979 Alfa Romeo Alfetta Berlina

October 21, 2014

In the continuing quest to chronicle all the surviving scruffy Alfettas in North America, not many have gone unnoticed. And for a long time, this poor little orphan was left out, since it’s got even more issues than the average Alfetta. But let’s remind ourselves of the positives – a tried and true four-cylinder engine, rear transaxle for excellent balance, and handsome, square late 1970s styling. Check out this 1979 Alfa Romeo Alfetta Berlina for sale for $1750 in Santa Cruz, CA.

Ragged Ragni – 1974 and 1973 Fiat 124 Spiders

October 20, 2014

If you oddball car lovers can’t find a 124 sedan or coupe to fulfill your twincam 4-seater needs, the spider is a more ubiquitous and excellent alternative. If you get one with rust and it gets a bit worse because you use it as a daily, no need to worry as it’s a common car. And the excellent top makes it a nearly all-weather car, with a good heater and decent power and reliability. For emergencies, there’s even a pair of tiny seats in back you can use for short trips. Paralyzed by rust worries? Find yourself a galvanized Audi or Porsche and get used to being kicked out of classic car drives. Fix it again Tony? Shut up! Now we’ve got that out of the way, take a look at this 1974 Fiat Spider for a mere $980 in Boulder Creek, CA.
