Fuel Crisis Coupe – 1973 Mercedes 450 SLC

October 17, 2014

The early 1970s is an interesting period for GT cars – many were built in the idiom of the golden age of postwar GTs, but most weren’t anywhere near as successful due to all those 1970s factors – fuel crises, emissions regulations, and in a way, safety regulations. Some pretty interesting cars were built in that period, including the Jensen Interceptor, Citroen SM, Triumph Stag, BMW E9 coupes, and Mercedes C107 coupes. The latter car remains the most affordable option today, and you can get a pretty decent car for short money compared to the others. What’s more is, parts are readily available due to the long life of their R107 roadster siblings, if not exactly cheap, and if you get an early-build (1972-3) car, you can get slim chrome bumpers instead of the ridiculous diving boards that did a lot to deface what was actually a fairly elegant design. You can find this 1973 Mercedes 450 SLC for sale for $4000 in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose, CA.

Piccolo Truck – 1976 Fiat 128 Pickup

October 16, 2014

So if the Ford Squire from the other day is just too confining, a Subaru BRAT has too many seats in the bed, and a VW pickup is just too big, there’s really not much out there for you. Fortunately, you’re not the only one who felt that way, and that’s why one man, no, one visionary grabbed a Sawzall, did some surgery on a 128 wagon, and presto! Those of you complaining about the lack of available small pickups should be thanking this person. Check out this 1976 Fiat 128 Pickup for sale for $1800 in Washougal, WA.

Rare Bird – 1951 Triumph Renown

October 15, 2014

In the early 1950s, Triumph was a little-known name in North America, and if they were known, it was likely for their 1800 and 2000 Roadsters, a kind of semi-sporty touring car – you could call it the Lexus SC400 convertible of its day, perfect for a drive to the country club to play a round of golf. As often happens, this car shared its basic bits with a sedan version. Both looked like they dated back to pre-war times, but were in fact manufactured just after World War 2. That said, the handsome razor-edge styling of the Renown sedan evoked the larger luxury cars of its time, while the 2-liter Standard Vanguard engine with 68hp tried its best. Check out this 1951 Triumph Renown for sale for $3000 in San Francisco, CA.
