Almost Famous – 1961 Chevrolet Corvair Van

September 12, 2013

Here’s something we don’t get very often at RustyButTrusty – a car that has participated in the same event as one of our fleet. Of course, for the Concours d’LeMons, the Corvair is no less obvious a choice than an Alfetta, and both show up in the Car & Driver coverage of the 2012 show. In any case, the van versions of the Corvair usually come in two flavors – totally sun-baked projects out in someone’s field, or lovingly restored models in the same price range as some VW microbuses. Not so for this Corvair 95 van, which is offered for a Buy-it-Now price of $2595 in Greenfield, CA.

RustyButTrusty on the Street #1 – Hilux and F12

August 15, 2013

To start what might become a new series of posts, I thought it would be interesting to share some of the more unusual vehicles seen on the streets in northern California. San Francisco and Oakland/Berkeley in particular are home to all kinds of oddball older cars, and we’ll get this started with a van and a truck (what!).

This 1979 Alfa Romeo F12 diesel van recently returned to California, under the influence of Andrew Watry, keeper of the Alfa Romeo Berlina Register. Powered by a 1.8 liter Perkins diesel with 50hp, it’s Alfa Romeo’s interpretation of the VW bus, with a three-spoke steering wheel, twin pod gauge cluster, and Alfa handling. Built from 1967-83, this one is a series two van with the black plastic grill and adhesive sticker badging.

Pleiades Double Happiness – Subaru Brat, Van, or both?

June 12, 2010

Of all the Japanese car brands, you’d think this one would have appeared here before. Subarus have an oddball history, with unusual styling, flat-4 engines, and all-wheel drive. And while many Japanese makes started out quirky, and gradually went mainstream, Subaru has stayed somewhat true to its roots, making its quirks into its key differentiators (sorry for the business-dork speak). Although, to be honest, Subaru has gone more mainstream in the dimensions of its cars, and has added frames to its windows. But on some level, that’s where all cars are moving as automotive technology matures even further – less than optimal solutions fall by the wayside.

Anyway, enough rambling! Let’s get back to the oddball cars. Subarus back in the 1970s were really pretty weird; maybe not so weird in the context of the other cars on the road when they were new, but with attrition and some hindsight, they are rather unusual cars. Beyond that, they had some pretty strange bodystyles, and while not terribly powerful, built a reputation for being tough and good in bad weather. Which brings us a car that’s become iconic for Subaru, with a famous seating arrangement. Our main feature for today is a Subaru Brat, which is listed for $2900 in the Canton area, north of Atlanta, GA.
