Arbitrage Opportunity – 1981 Toyota Pickup

December 17, 2015

Anybody who’s spent time in San Francisco will have noticed the night-time recyclers, driving around in trucks overloaded with cardboard, bottles, and cans, making a racket sifting through people’s recycle bins for the choice pieces. Their vehicle of choice is often a 25-30 year-old Toyota pickup. Or you might have noticed that building contractors and maintenance workers prefer smaller vehicles to carry their tools and supplies. Their vehicle of choice is often a 25-30 year-old Toyota pickup or van. That puts a higher than normal pressure on the market for these vehicles, which brings us to an interesting opportunity – say you lived in another nearby city but had frequent business in San Francisco – could you make a small amount of money buying a nearby truck, driving it down, and flipping it to a small-truck-loving San Franciscan? Now all we need is a truck – check out this 1981 Toyota Pickup for sale for $1700 in Vancouver, WA.

Mixed Feelings – 2005 Toyota Corolla XRS

November 24, 2015

Mostly, RustyButTrusty’s domain is confined to cars 30 years and older, but every so often, something interesting pops up that’s hard to avoid featuring. You’re probably asking yourself why a Corolla would even be here, as, apart from being trusty, it’s pretty much the antithesis of everything ever featured here. Well, there are a couple of interesting features on this car that make it a viable successor to many of the front-wheel-drive 4AGE-powered Toyota and Geo products of the 1980s. Check out this 2005 Toyota Corolla XRS for sale for $4500 in Corvallis, OR.

Inspiration – 1986 Toyota Corolla GTS

November 12, 2015

A recent rental of a Subaru BR-Z (AKA Scion FR-S) was enough of an eye-opener to inspire a look into a couple of possible influences. It’s a relatively lightweight 2+2 coupe that, compared to most new cars, is surprisingly raw and engaging to drive. If you’ve despaired about the surfeit of cars that try to be everything to everyone, it’s definitely worth looking at this pure sports coupe that allows you to have some fun without getting into illegal territory. But enough of new cars, the first classic in this mini-series is a pretty obvious choice. Check out this 1986 Toyota Corolla GTS for sale for $4000 in Riverside, CA.
