Water Cooled – 1970 Porsche 914 V8

August 21, 2014

Until recently, with the Porsche craze driving up 911 and 356 prices well into the six figures, the 914 was kind of a backwater of Porsche enthusiasm. Air cooled it was, sure, and the engine was near the back, but the VW connection, divisive design, and VW-bus-derived engine made it the poor relation, with fans limited to diehards like autocross nuts who couldn’t live with an X1/9, and backroad burners who appreciated its mid-engine balance. For a while there, the 914 was pretty cheap, and people were not afraid to bastardize them with engines from various manufacturers, including Subaru, Maserati, Chevrolet, and Oldsmobile. To wit, check out this 1970 Porsche 914 with an Oldsmobile 215 V8 for sale with bidding at $3550 and 16 hours left to go in Eugene, OR.

Porsche Bubble (Butt) – 1979 Porsche 928

June 2, 2014

With all this talk about the bubble in Porsche values, you’d think there was not a single affordable Porsche for the whiners to purchase. Sure, it sucks that not everybody got their hands on a 911S for $12,000 in 1990, but are you in this for the money, or the cars? If you are looking for Porsche engineering with a low cost of entry, you have to find the cars at the bottom of the depreciation curve. Back in the 1990s or the aughts (did we ever decide what the last decade was called?), 911 targas and 914s were the accessible Porsches. Ten to twenty years on, the accessible cars are 924s, 944s, and 928s – and who knows, perhaps in 20 years, someone will be complaining about the bubble in 928 values. Want to get in on the ground floor? Check out this 1979 Porsche 928, for sale for $3900 in San Carlos, CA.

No Oxymoron – 1985 Porsche 944

May 19, 2014

After a recent article highlighting oxymorons in car-nut land, here are a couple more: Front-engine Porsche. Cheap Porsche. Or are they? If you were a young car nut looking for an older sports car, one with some good durability behind it given regular maintenance, and attractive enough to have been featured in movies, what would you pick? Sure, the Miata is an obvious choice, and they have their place, but they’re far from unusual, and arguably derivative of existing designs. E30 BMWs are also a good option, but even if their performance lives up to the claim, their styling doesn’t really scream sports car. So how about a cheap, front-engine Porsche? Check out this 1985 Porsche 944 for sale for $2950 in Los Gatos, CA.
