Special Canadian – 1966 Mercury M100

October 30, 2015

Even though this site has a primary focus on cars, it’s interesting to take an occasional look at other related vehicles that either enable the hobby or capture some of the same elements we like so much about affordable classics. With pickup trucks it’s a little of both – they can help haul stuff around, and they have an elemental simplicity and purity of focus since they were built mainly with utility in mind. Of course, the other focus of this site is the oddball, and nothing scratches that itch like an otherwise ordinary truck that’s been rebranded for sale in another market. With that, check out this 1966 Mercury M100 for sale for $3000 in Calgary, AB.

Minitruck Madness – 1972 Datsun 521 Pickup

September 10, 2015

Much like it’s fun to try out different food, clothing style, or paint your house an unusual color, so it’s also fun to try out a style of car you might never normally own. Unfortunately, cars are usually expensive enough to prohibit that kind of thing, particularly cars where someone’s invested significant time or money to take them in a certain direction. So you probably won’t find many cars with kustom paint jobs that are under the self-imposed RustyButTrusty price cap, but with some patience you can find that 1980s custom minitruck of your dreams. Check out this 1972 Datsun 521 pickup for sale for $3500 somewhere on the peninsula south of San Francisco, CA.

Xtra-Caddy – 1982 VW Rabbit Extended Pickup

April 9, 2015

Sometimes, the goal is to do what the others do, but with better bang for your buck. A couple of weeks back, one of the other car blogs (what, there are others?) featured a stretched VW Rabbit pickup in unfinished project condition for a whopping $7500. At RustyButTrusty, it’s time to challenge the notion a rather obscure pickup with questionable build quality (both from the Westmoreland, PA factory and the conversion) should cost as much, as, hmmm… a pretty nice driver BMW 2002. So here we have a rather obscure pickup with questionable factory and post-conversion build quality for the price of, erm, a project BMW 2002. Check out this 1982 VW Rabbit pickup XtraCab conversion, for sale for $2650 in Olympia, WA.
