Autobahn Bruiser – Gray Market 1983 Mercedes Benz 380SE

October 8, 2013

European market cars of the late 1970s and 1980s still have a forbidden fruit quality to them that makes them especially appealing (and for that matter, any newer car that wasn’t sold here), and that characteristic makes cars that otherwise wouldn’t merit a second glance worthwhile. While we here had to contend with outsize bumpers, sealed beam headlamps, smog-strangled engines, and in some makes’ case, the same style of wheel on every model (think 1980s BMW and Mercedes in a general sense – bottlecaps and bundts were near-universal), the Europeans had trim design, a variety of accessories, and power! For a good example of forbidden 1980s fruit, have a look at this 1983 Mercedes 380SE offered for $3400 in Millstone Township, NJ.

East Coast vs. West Coast – Pair of 1985 Mercedes 190E 2.3 5-speeds

September 21, 2013

With BMW M3s going skywards in value, I’ve been fantasizing about picking up a similar car while they’re still at the bottom of their depreciation curve. Unfortunately a good, sorted BMW M5 or Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth will still set you back $15-20,000, possibly more for a stellar example. Sooo, what to do on a baby budget? Pick up a version of the first baby Benz, that’s what – and it might be a surprise that these little cars were available with 5-speed manual transmissions when they came out. Check out the first choice, a pale yellow 1985 190E 2.3 for $2000 in Durham, NC.

250 Manual, Part 2 – 1969 Mercedes 250

September 19, 2013

If you’re intrigued by the idea of a manual shift Mercedes, but can’t afford a pagoda SL and are intimidated by possible repair costs on the car featured before this one, fear not, there are more alternatives. You can have the same powertrain found in those other cars, in a slightly more modern body. This was the last project Paul Bracq completed for Mercedes before moving to design the French TGV train, and then working for BMW and Peugeot, and it maintains the elegant, simple lines seen in his other work. You can find today’s 1969 Mercedes 250 W114 with bidding at $2900 and less than 1 day to go in Newark, NJ.
