Most Modern – 1994 Mazda MX-3 GS V6

July 23, 2013

So this is straying a little far from what we generally like to feature here at RustyButTrusty, but hear me out and you might see the same thing. Introduced in 1991, the Mazda MX-3 is a tidy little sports coupe that was recognized for great handling. In fact, back in 1994 one joined the family. Unfortunately, it was the rather gutless 4-cylinder model, and was the inspiration for a family ban on Japanese cars. Irrational? Yes, but you try driving one on a regular basis and tell me how it makes you feel!

Anyway, what makes these cars interesting for us is the fact they were offered with one of the smallest displacement V6 engines ever, at 1.8 liters. At 300cc per cylinder, you could say it’s the equivalent of a 1.2 liter four, or a 3.6 liter twelve. Hey wait, who has a 3.6 liter twelve? Ferrari? Does that make this half a Ferrari engine? No! But, does a small-displacement 6, 8, or 12-cylinder engine sound great? Yes! And that’s where we’re going with this one – buy one of today’s feature cars for short money, get a sweet-sounding exhaust system, and make sure you have a tunnel or reflective wall on your way to work, because you’ll want to wind it up every day. First up is this 1994 model in Elizabeth City, NC, in the Outer Banks area, for $2500.

Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato mash-up: 1989 Honda CRX Si and 1978 Alfa Romeo Spider

June 1, 2013

Imagine you always wanted an Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato. And supposing you didn’t have the $25-50,000 to purchase one of those. Supposing you only had $10,000. Well, for a mere $6990, my friend, you too can have both the style and the exotic twincam powertrain of that more expensive car. And what’s more is – get this – you get two whole cars in the deal! Now, you might think I’m suggesting you take the guts from the spider, and put them in the CRX, but that would be crazy. The CRX is a great car in its own right, even if it cribbed its styling from an obscure early 1970s Alfa, and the spider is an underrated classic. The CRX is up in Kent, WA for $3490, and the spider is near LA in Diamond Bar, CA for $3500.

Put a rotary in it! 1973 Mazda RX-2 sedan

March 17, 2012

Now that she’s out in the open, I’ll come clean – I’ve been spending a lot of time working on car projects so I’d be ready for the next big project – a baby! Since she’s doing well, I’m celebrating by writing a quick post on my favorite subject: cars! I was poking around eBay and couldn’t find anything really compelling. Finally thought I’d write about a first-gen RX-7, but then I stumbled upon this, and how could I resist: a funky Euro-looking sedan with a funky Euro-invented engine, built in Japan, and sold in the US.

There’s something of the Opel Manta, Dino Spider/206/246, and maybe something else Italian in this car. Or am I thinking of the Mazda Luce from the late 60s? Either way, this is a handsome little sedan, and the taillights hint at its sporting engine. It’s currently available on eBay in lovely Whittier, CA with a Buy-it-Now price of $2998, or an opening bid of $2499 if you’re feeling luck, punk.
