Lancia Mechanic’s Special – 1991 Suzuki Swift GTi

November 21, 2013

Who doesn’t like themselves a small, nimble, lightweight car that can untangle the twisties? By the early 1990s, such a car was becoming fairly rare. Sure, you could buy fun compacts all day, like the GTI, Civic Si, Mirage Turbo and Corolla FX16. But the subcompact class was pretty sparse, with the depressing Ford Aspire (tagline: “I aspire to no longer drive this car”), Geo Metro, and Kia Spectra as your main options… with one glowing exception: this Suzuki Swift GTi. You can find this little rocket, which is sure to be 2041’s Mini Cooper S in terms of collectibility, for sale with bidding at $2000 and only one day left to go in Oakland, CA.

No GSE – 1992 Pontiac LeMans

November 18, 2013

In about 1982, you might have thought the Opel by Buick was the final straw in GM’s long line of captive European imports. Pontiac itself had imported Vauxhalls briefly from 1957-62, but back in the 1980s they went looking for another import to throw their badge on so they could appeal to Americans looking for better fuel economy combined with driving excitement (and while they were at it, improve their CAFE numbers). And hey, why not throw their name on it? Everyone else was doing it, with the car variously sold as the Opel Kadett, Vauxhall Astra, Chevrolet Kadett, Chevrolet Ipanema, Passport Optima, and about 40 different models of Daewoo. Moreover, this car had won European Car of the Year in 1985 for its sharp aerodynamic looks, which in retrospect are indeed pretty smart. After Hyundai’s Excel debacle in North America, you’d think Pontiac would have chosen to source their LeMans from Opel, but instead they went to Daewoo in Korea. Equipped with a 74hp 1.5-liter four-cylinder, and later a 95hp 2.0-liter four, they had a guaranteed winner on their hands. However, they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, and now there are very few LeMans remaining, among them this 1992 Pontiac LeMans Aerocoupe for sale in Lake Stevens, WA for $1900.

Small-Wheel-Drive – 1988 and 1989 Subaru Justys

November 10, 2013

Even Subaru was not above jumping on the subcompact bandwagon in the late 1980s, producing a small car to help Americans and others save on fuel costs. Of course, being Subaru, they figured out ways to do things differently. That’s how they ended up with not only a three-cylinder engine, but also the smallest all-wheel-drive car on the market. Of course, the all-wheel-drive detracted from this car’s main objective, saving on fuel. Needless to say, Subaru was not too successful in this endeavor – perhaps it would have gone better if they’d fitted a turbo to the all-wheel-drive car and called it the Justy WRX. Either way, these cars are surprisingly capable in rough terrain, and would have lasted longer were they not low-cost throwaway cars. You can find our survivor 1988 Subaru Justy for sale for $1800 in Alta Loma, CA.
