Donnerwetter! 1970 Opel GT, Rostfrei

January 7, 2010

Before you start thinking I’ve turned German, rest assured I already am. But I’ll keep the German to the titles… I’ve been dying to feature one of these for quite a while, since and they look like a pretty fun ride, with 109hp from its 1.9l engine and weighing in at a light 2000 lb. That power-to-weight is competitive with most sports cars of the time, even if the engine and chassis are not the most refined. With over 100,000 cars sold, these were at one time quite common, but now it’s difficult to find a driver-quality car that isn’t priced beyond the range preferred here.

If you’re going to get an early 1970s sports car, you might as well get it in one of the wacky colors they had back then, all the better to stand out from the silver Accords and gold Corollas dominating the road. This 1970 GT is available from Opels Unlimited in Rialto, CA with a current bid of $540 and 8 days to go. No guarantees it won’t go over the magic $3,000 line, but judging by the cosmetics the likelihood is low.

Proven duo: 1979 Alfa Romeo Sprint Veloce

November 20, 2009

Having just got back into my Alfetta, and realizing what a great car it is to drive, I thought I’d look up a couple more of these. For the money, as long as you’re patient have deep pockets to get you through smog, these can be a lot of fun. Aside from the SPICA pump oil filter, which has been craftily hidden behind the oil pump, they’re fairly easy and straightforward to work on. While they don’t have the extensive US competition history the 105/115 GTVs have, they’re still attractive cars with a design that is clearly related to the Scirocco and Esprit. Changing to smaller European stainless bumpers also does a lot to clean up the look – I highly recommend this for anyone with a US-market Alfetta.

Anyway, enough waxing on about these cars – here’s our first example, a 1979 Sprint Veloce that can be found on craigslist in Bellevue, WA for $2500. This car might be a Velocissima edition Alfetta, which got the Ronal A1 wheels you see here, along with some other aerodynamic bits and pieces that would be hard to see on a black car. Seller seems to have read the manual on how to photograph cars for sale, since he’s included 2 outside pics from different angles (one from the rear would have been better), an interior shot, and an engine shot. He also claims extensive service history, including an engine service for $4K, and some performance modifications. Detail-oriented eyes will notice some rusty-looking areas on the passenger-side inner wheel well, but I believe those are just smog stickers. Get rid of the Ferrari logo on the wheel, fix the key marks in the paint, and you should be good to go!

Holy Pistons! 1976 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT turbo

July 8, 2009

Update, 7/8/09: This car is now available on eBay, with better pictures showing its condition. Still looks like a solid project for that price, and it’s possible this is a period Jafco turbo setup.

As you might know if you’ve looked around elsewhere here, I’m the proud owner of a faded and somewhat rusty, but solid and reliable, 1979 Alfetta GT (sprint veloce). The shape shows some typical design characteristics of its period, and the car is very close in some ways to the contemporary VW Scirocco and Lotus Esprit (start with the trapezoidal windshield), which were all done by Giugiaro. Anyway, I thought I’d post this car to assuage my guilt about not finishing off the Alfetta’s clutch slave cylinder – it’s all hooked up, just needs bleeding and bolting into place to be done.

This sweet-looking car (okay, the flesh-toned paint job is a little weird) has the desirable 5-star Daytona-style wheels, a lip spoiler on the hatch, rollbar, and a large turbo. It is listed for $2500 in Denver, CO. The seller has had the car garaged for years, and has now realized he will never get this non-running car on the road. As you can see in the side shot below, the car has also been lowered:
