Wagon-Off – 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 Country Sedan vs. 1969 Dodge Polara Wagon

December 12, 2015

You can’t take a serious look at station wagons without looking at the American whales of the postwar era. Much like shopping for a crossover today, you could hardly throw a rock on dealer row without hitting one of these barges. And since they were so prolific back when they were new, it’s still possible to find decent examples for short money now. Fortunately, this week’s search for wagons turned up a decent pair of 1969 cars, arguably a high point for American cars. No Edsel – 1979 AMC Pacer D/L Wagon

December 4, 2015

From a North American perspective, the AMC Pacer is mostly viewed as an albatross – not terribly successful, poor image, and overly futuristic (for 1975) styling. But step back a little to a global perspective, and let go of the cultural baggage, and this car is a real oddball, and for all the right reasons – AMC made an aggressive move during a time of crisis in the US auto industry, and unfortunately the gamble contributed to their demise. Think of it as America’s Citroen DS, or perhaps its Lancia Gamma – the latter is maybe a more apt analogue since it was very creative and interesting to a specific enthusiast subculture, but didn’t do anything to help its maker’s fortunes. Check out this 1979 AMC Pacer DL Wagon for sale for $2395 in Smith Ferry, ID.

Rhymes With? – 1976 Pontiac Sunbird

December 1, 2015

Speaking of once-popular cars that are now largely forgotten, this is one that is popular because it was produced by GM with its strong distribution network, but not because it had much intrinsic virtue. Basically a rebadged, slightly refined Chevrolet Vega, it was only offered in the notchback body style and intended to compete with “sporty” coupes like the Mustang II, Capri, Datsun 200SX, and Toyota Celica. And it was certainly there on the field, but whether it truly competed was another question. Check out this 1976 Pontiac Sunbird for sale for $3995 in Foley, MN.
