Strich Acht – 1973 Mercedes 280C

January 1, 2011

Mercedes have never held as great appeal for me as some other cars, I think because they didn’t have sporting intentions like my preferred Italians and Germans. That said, coupes can be pretty sporty, and the 2.8 liter engine in the top-of-the line W114 Mercedes coupes is a twincam six, so there must be something fun about it. Also, as Mercedes goes off on a path of broader appeal to people who like McMansions, people who like SUVs, and other things like that, it’s getting easier and easier to appreciate the over-engineered, last-forever approach they took to their cars up through the 1980s. Combined with the positive associations the W114/W115 bodystyle has for me (the family of a childhood friend had a red 280 sedan I think I mentioned in a past post), I find myself looking at these and wanting to see what kind of a weekend driver they would be. This post’s example is an elegant white 280C in Mira Loma for a paltry $3500.

What a formal roof line – elegant and yet different from the later, sleeker W123 and W124 coupes. Unfortunately, the seller decided to post night photos, but since it’s a white car you can at least see there’s no major rust penetration. Also, you can hope for limited rust since the car’s down in inland southern California, but at the same time there’s no telling how shiny or dull the paint is. At least it’s reflecting the flash, so it’s got some gloss left in it. According to the seller it’s dent-free and everything works well, so that’s a good start.

Rally-Style Project – 1973 Fiat 124 coupe

May 28, 2010

I’ve written about Fiat 124 coupes before, so no doubt I’ve already gone off about how these cars are a great lesser-known alternative to an Alfa Romeo GTV or BMW 2002. Think about it – 4 seats, spacious trunk, 5-speed transmission, and a twincam alloy head four-cylinder. So why are there so few around? Well, nearly every car sold in the 1970s was prone to rust, but some more than others… and the 124 coupe was one of those. As a closed car, they were subject to hard daily use, unlike their spider brothers.

Like the once-popular Ford Capri, these are now pretty hard to find. But they do pop up every so often in west coast classifieds. In fact, an AC coupe needing restoration has been listed for several months by a classic car dealer in the Pacific Northwest for a rather high price. Most cars on the market are much more reasonable, though, and today’s car is one of those, listed for $1850 in Burlingame, CA.

Slow & sporty – 1966 Fiat 850 coupe

March 16, 2010

Inspired by a Fiat 128 SL I saw street-parked in San Francisco Friday night, I decided to look for one of the more unusual Fiats we got here in the US market. In fact, I’ve never featured a Fiat 850 of any type, even though the spiders are still pretty available, because they mostly come in restored (and pricey) or basket-case form. While these might not be the best daily-driver vintage car (unlike their bigger brothers in the 124 series), they are certainly a fine choice for the multi-marque vintage car rallies gaining in popularity recently.

The 850 coupe, with its 843cc engine putting out 47hp, will not tear up the tarmac, but if you consider some comparable cars (engine-size-wise), making it slightly less powerful (but not necessarily slower) than a Spitfire or a Midget, and much more powerful than a bugeye Sprite. In spite of its elegant styling and sporty engine, the 850 is valued lower by the market than its British competitors, so you’re getting more car for the money. As you can see on this 850 coupe, listed in Deforest, WI (near Madison) for $2500, the Italians designed some of the best-looking small cars of their time.
