Stock? Really? – 1990 Honda Civic CR-X Si

Toyota’s MR2 has a more exotic layout, and is less likely to be the recipient of poorly judged upgrades from your local purveyor of diamond plate floor mats and neon green nylon seat covers, but when you find an apparently stock example of Honda’s CR-X, it’s hard to ignore. And if you enjoy the responsive engine and sharp handling, but want a little extra utility, the sporty version of the 2-seat commuter as interpreted by Honda is well worth consideration. Let’s check out this 1990 Honda CR-X Si for sale for $2600 in Vancouver, WA.

1990 Honda Civic CRX Si left front

So many of these are poorly modified HF or DX versions, and it’s great their place as an everyman’s sportscar has made them so popular, but once everyone starts fooling with the original formula to make their car special, the un-messed-with ones become special themselves. That said, this car is not exactly unspoilt – faded paint, shallow dents in both doors, and a rebuilt title all suggest it’s had a busy life. But consider that, in other parts of North America, this car would be crispy all over.

The faded paint is actually interesting because it suggests whatever caused the rebuilt title is far from recent. As a car from the penultimate year of production, this car gets all the mechanical improvements, including 4-wheel disc brakes, updated 14″ alloy wheels, and – from the previous year – a revised cam good for 3 extra horsepower. While the Si model had the lowest production of any CRX, they just barely trailed the HF and accounted for 28% of production. Notice the clean, straight, complete body that makes this car a good basis for a rolling project. Plates are missing – does this mean the car is not currently registered, and if so, why?

1990 Honda Civic CRX Si spare tire well

The seller offers a picture of the spare tire well, and there doesn’t seem to be any evidence of crash damage here – perhaps the title issue stems from a theft recovery? Mileage is high at 176,000, but Hondas of this period seem to go pretty far with good care. It’s nice to see the original jack, tool kit, and spare present.

1990 Honda Civic CRX Si interior

For the mileage, the interior is very clean, but there is some tearing on the driver’s outside seat bolster, and traces of scuffing on the dash. Everything here is complete, down to the luggage compartment cover and even the factory radio! While original production figures were not exactly low for this version, finding one this original 25 years on makes it a bit of a unicorn, and at this price, it seems worth a look.
