Sports Box – 1991 Volvo 740 Turbo

As discussed in the past, Volvo 740 and 760 series cars have never aroused the interest of enthusiasts the way many other Volvos have. So these cars tend to languish in used car purgatory, where somewhere around $2000 will get you a reasonably clean, well-kept if not very exciting version of designer Jan Wilsgaard’s box-on-wheels. Interestingly enough, Wilsgaard was born in New York, and was chief designer for all Volvos running from the 122 to the 850. And perhaps it was this simple design that was the blessing and curse at once, following the brand identity but turning off many enthusiasts. Nonetheless, some people just won’t be deterred, like the seller of this 1991 Volvo 740 Turbo, for sale for $3600 in San Leandro, CA.

Blue on gold wheels is a classic color combination for a sporting car, and vaguely references the Swedish flag. The car has some minor body damage and paint failure, but benefits from many performance modifications, including ipd cam and gear, spark plug wires, larger turbo, stainless cat-back exhaust with performance catalytic converter, adjustable panhard bar, drilled discs, and factory spoiler. It sits lowered on progressive springs and Voxx wheels, or you can get the factory Hydras for a $500 reduction.

The car does have some minor damage to the interior, but has a significantly upgraded stereo, dynamat lining the trunk, tinted windows, and working air conditioning. Hopefully the snake’s nest of wires in the center console is related to the stereo, but these would be better off hidden. It’s also said to pass smog, which is good to know given the engine upgrades. In spite of the suspension modifications, the car is said to have a smooth ride, helped no doubt by Volvo’s wonderful seats. The owner also promises a history of regular maintenance by a Volvo master technician.

The B230FT turbo four put out 162hp stock, so it would be interesting to know what the output is with the upgrades. Sadly, the car is saddled with the automatic transmission, so it’s probably relegated to the role of fun commuter, or sporty car for your clutch-hating spouse/special friend/child. This configuration might also work well as a learning tool for a beginner on the track or autocross course – you can focus on cornering technique when you’re not fiddling with a clutch and shifter. If you’ve never thought of the 740 as a performance car to take sliding around a cloverleaf, here’s your chance to reconsider.
