Not a Diesel – 1976 BMW 2002

Lest you think this has become Diesel But Trusty, there are several interesting cars out there that don’t depend on diesels of excessive (or excessively limited) longevity. Although BMW 2002s in excellent condition have escalated beyond the lower-cost range of classic cars, you can still get a decent car if you’re willing to put some time into it, or live with a little rust, or perhaps a less popular color. Well, we have a combination of a handful of undesirable factors in a car that’s pretty decent overall – check out this 1976 BMW 2002 for sale in Sellwood, OR (near Portland) for $3500.

Of course it’s been photographed in the rain, which usually makes cars look better, but this is not a bad looking car for the price. The color is called Siennabraun (people will have you believe Sienna is how they say “root beer” in German, but you might want to check with a translator on that), and barring a little clearcoat damage, it’s said to be in good shape. The original steel wheels, fortunately not replaced with the ubiquitous 3-series bottlecap wheels, have been powdercoated in silver.

The engine compartment looks clean for a driver car, although the original air filter assembly has gone missing. The front and rear shock towers are solid, and the engine is said to be strong, with the brakes and steering also working fine. Unfortunately the picture is not as close up as one would hope, so it’s hard to deduce much about the condition.

1976 BMW 2002 interior

The interior is original, and is surprisingly more worn looking than the rest of the car. The seats are both dirty and pretty torn up, so you really only have two options, tacky seat covers from Pep Boys or an upholstery kit. The door panels may be a little warped, and have been cut for speakers, but the rest of the interior actually looks usable. Finally, while most of the car is solid, there is one spot of rust under the gas cap. In the shot below, you can also see the little bumper accordion has been compressed, and the paint has suffered from fuel spills. But overall, this looks like a decent little car with some room for you to spend time bonding with it fixing it up.

It’s down to $3000 in the ad! it looks solid in the pics too. Unfortunately is about as far away from podunk as you can get without crossing into a another country.
