Starter 2002s – 1970 BMW 2002 and bonus 1972 2002

As an owner of a 2002 that’s currently parked while the Alfetta gets some much-delayed sorting, the longing for the 2002 inspired a quick search. The BMW 2002 FAQ is a popular forum for folks addicted to these little boxes, so what better place to look for another? Sure enough, a couple starter candidates turned up. The first is a 1970 BMW 2002 for $3000 in Emeryville, CA.

Looks like a straight car, although it’s missing its waistline trim and the rear bumper is slightly bent. As can be seen in the picture below, the left rear corner is wearing the spare tire, with the regular bottlecap wheel in the front passenger seat. Lack of time is the most likely explanation, but why sell a car like this and not do a quick wash and get the matching wheel’s tire fixed? That could add a few more dollars to the sale price and some confidence for the buyer.

Anyhow, the seller has 2 other 2002s, but says this one runs just fine and has no rust. The interior appears to be from a 535is or some other 1980s BMW. The car is now black, but the original Sahara is visible in the engine compartment shot. The grill is apparently loose, and the kidney section is slightly bent. How much could a replacement one cost?

Here’s the interior. Note the nice seats, and also the missing shift knob and center console. The steering wheel looks like an oddball 80s Momo or perhaps Alpina that should probably go in favor of a standard bus wheel, which might be a way to pay for the new tire and car wash!

What happened to the air filter cover? Looks like there are some loose wires on the lower right of this shot, but for a working engine compartment, this doesn’t look too bad or too dirty. Notice the Sahara paint – what would you do? Bring it back to Sahara, finish off the schwarz-ening, or just drive it?

1972 BMW 2002 right rear

If that’s not good enough for you, or you live on the other side of the country, here’s a 1972 2002 that looks like a pretty tidy fix-and-drive project. The car has a seized engine, but the seller has a parts car. Why would you go to the trouble of schlepping a car out from California, only to store it on the grass, where it will quickly rust up just like all the east coast cars?

  1. Nicholas Byrne Says:

“BMW Part 2002: The Schwartzening” sounds like a pretty good title for a car restoration-themed horror movie from the 70’s.
