Saturated – 1985 Merkur XR4Ti

When you work with creative people, you get an interesting perspective on color, font, spacing, and other design-related characteristics. One interesting little tidbit is that Americans tend to have a preference for photography with more saturated colors – perhaps this dates back to the days of Technicolor movies and pictures? If you’re wondering what the heck this has to do with cars, or what saturated means when it’s not related to fat, take a look at this red 1985 Merkur XR4Ti, with bidding at $2200 and 4 days left to go in Fullerton, CA.

It’s amazing to see a red car of this age with no fading, which is how you can tell it’s had a repaint. It’s had some other upgrades, including later BBS wheels and a Sierra Cosworth bi-plane wing and front grill. Where this car once looked dated, the red paint and 1980s aerodynamic features now play quite well, the same way the BMW M3 and Audi Quattro’s styling look good again. Hey, neon clothing is back too, right?

The engine has had some upgrades, including for the turbo wastegate, blow-off valve and intercooler – hopefully it doesn’t make that idiotic puffing noise you hear coming from every slammed WRX. The car also has upgraded springs and shocks. In another random aside, did you know Merkur is also a German razor manufacturer?

According to the seller, the interior is in great condition – no cracks, tears, or stains, and the headliner is holding up properly. Everything looks great except for the odd choice of a rainbow colored shift knob and filler panel where what looks to be a radar detector is mounted. Those things should be easy to change, however.

All this means the price may rise beyond what we typically consider affordable. If that’s the case for you, check out this 1988 Merkur XR4Ti for $3800 in Corte Madera, CA, just north of San Francisco. With recent service, a 5-speed, and cold air conditioning, it sounds like a pretty good buy.
