Breaking the Law – 1975 BMW 2002

May 19, 2013

You may have wondered over the past couple years where RustyButTrusty has been. Lately he didn’t seem so interested in you, or the cars he wrote about so regularly. In spite of the title, which suggests he was in jail for some kind of white collar crime, he was actually taking a break to focus on family and career. Depending on your perspective, good fortune or fate has brought him back to write here again. And so here we have our first feature car in a long time, a 1975 BMW 2002.

Oh, why the title? There’s a fairly recent addition to the fleet. The Lancia Beta Berlina moved along a couple of years back (if you look, you can see the new owner has it listed for sale) and there is now another vehicle which has taken its place: a 1972 BMW 2002 tii. So far, the cars I’ve written about and purchased have been no more than a few thousand dollars and often a little frayed around the edges. While technically the new member of the fleet fulfills a couple of the criteria, I defy anyone to find a running, driving 2002 tii in that price range! Anyway, see the Fleet section in the near future for updates on that.

On to our subject car – a refrigerator white 1975 BMW 2002. Prices for these cars seem to be steadily going up, but if you look around, you can still find some apparent deals. So you can find an unmolested-looking example for $2500 in our state’s lovely capitol, Sacramento, CA.

Not Broken? 1972 Citroen DS 21 Safari

March 25, 2012

So maybe it’s the new baby in the house that I can blame for looking at wagons, or maybe it’s the fascination I’ve had with these since I can remember. I have vague memories of one of these being parked in the alley where my route manager used to drop copies of the Palo Alto Times Tribune when I was 12 (can you imagine now, letting a kid fold papers in an alley?). Anyway, I’ve been looking at these (and Corvair Lakewood wagons) when a pretty decent example popped up in the local craigslist. Being craigslist, though, you don’t always get top-notch photography, although it’s still more than you’d have got in the classifieds of the paper I delivered. So we have one picture and a short description by which to judge today’s feature. Today’s car is listed for sale in West Marin for the seemingly reasonable price of $3000.

Put a rotary in it! 1973 Mazda RX-2 sedan

March 17, 2012

Now that she’s out in the open, I’ll come clean – I’ve been spending a lot of time working on car projects so I’d be ready for the next big project – a baby! Since she’s doing well, I’m celebrating by writing a quick post on my favorite subject: cars! I was poking around eBay and couldn’t find anything really compelling. Finally thought I’d write about a first-gen RX-7, but then I stumbled upon this, and how could I resist: a funky Euro-looking sedan with a funky Euro-invented engine, built in Japan, and sold in the US.

There’s something of the Opel Manta, Dino Spider/206/246, and maybe something else Italian in this car. Or am I thinking of the Mazda Luce from the late 60s? Either way, this is a handsome little sedan, and the taillights hint at its sporting engine. It’s currently available on eBay in lovely Whittier, CA with a Buy-it-Now price of $2998, or an opening bid of $2499 if you’re feeling luck, punk.
